畸变由于主光线的光路偏离而引起的成像缺陷。当光学系统校正好球差、彗差、像散和像面弯曲四种像差时,主光线与高斯像面的交点即为像点所在,并且是清晰的。但是当主光线与高斯像面的交点高度y与相应物点的理想成像高度y不等时,使像发生变形,与原来物体不相似。畸变可表示为称绝对畸变。或者以百分数表示称相对畸变。 畸变是由于垂轴放大率在整个视场范围内不能保持常数而引起的。当一个有畸变的光学系统对一个方形的网状物体(图2a)成像时,若δy>0,则主光线的交点高度y比理想像高 y低,视场越大,低得越多,形成一啤酒桶形状的图像(如图2b),故又称正畸变为桶形畸变;若δy<0,则y比理想像高y高,视场越大,高得越多,形成一种枕头形的图像(如图2c),故负畸变又称枕形畸变。在一般的光学系统中,只要畸变引起的图像变形不为人眼所觉察,是可以允许的,这一允许的畸变值约为4%。但是有些需根据图像来测定物体尺寸的光学系统,如航空测量镜头等,畸变则直接影响测量精度,必须对其严加校正,使畸变小到万分之一甚至十万分之几。一般而言,畸变数值随光阑(指孔径光阑,下同)位置而异。对于单个薄透镜或薄透镜组,当光阑与之重合时,畸变为零。如果光学系统在光阑两边的光学结构互相对称,且整个系统的垂轴放大率β=-1时,互相对称的光学表面对垂轴像差(彗差、畸变等)有数值相等而符号相反的贡献,故整个光学系统的垂轴像差为零。因此对畸变要求严格的光学系统往往采取对称或近似对称的结构形式。
