The Nine Nation Suites of the Fairmont Peace Hotel are the original suite deluxe of the Cathay Hotel.

The 1930s style is in the timbered walls of head-high oak paneling and deep oak window sills on which to lean and gaze at the river, listen to the sound of the ships’ horns and the bells of the Customs House clock on the Bund.

Each suite shows the decorative details of a nation – sturdy hand-laid floors with boards softened by age, and roses and oak leaves in the plaster molding of the ceilings in the British Suite, strong dark Art Deco paneling and wide high fire-places in the American Suite, and in the Japanese Suite sliding doors and tatami mats on raised floors give the quiet serenity of open room space. The Indian Suite, the roof raised in a Mughul arch, is furnished with rich colours and deep carpets and hanging lamps of filigree metal lace. From the door of the Chinese Suite, through the circle of the moon-gate wall and the windows beyond, is seen the Huangpu River, the “mother river of Shanghai”. The styles and colours of Europe are recognized in the French, German, Spanish and Italian Suites, with their fireplaces of patterned brick, wooden floors with deep carpets and ceilings of coloured molding.
