老年参与社会老年人以就业劳动、社区社会活动、闲暇活动等形式开展的活动。目的是保持与社会的联系。老年人参与社会的意义大体可归纳为：①发挥老年人的人力和智力的潜能。②丰富老年人的生活，消除老年人离退休后产生的孤独感和失落感。③增强老年人的自信。从根本上改变社会和老年人自身对老年形象的错误认识。影响老年人参与社会的因素很多，其中主要有个人条件、家庭状况和社会环境等3个方面:①个人条件影响最大的是文化程度、身以健康状况和职业技能特点。②家庭状况影响的主要因素是家务负担和家庭及个人经济状况。③社会环境的影响主要是社会生活服务是否发达，参与条件是否完备，以及社会对老年人力和智力要求的高低。社会生活服务发达，参与社会的条件完备，社会需求高，老年人参与社会的机率就高；反之，则低。发达国家的老年人参与社会的机率一般高于发展中国家的老年人。老年参与社会的发展趋势随着老年人体素质的提高，家庭负担的减轻，参与条件的完善，将会得到不断的发展。老年人对社会发展的贡献也将越来越大。中国农村和城市的老年人参与社会的状况有明显的差别。大多数农村的老年人长期从事农业劳动，而当前的农业生产主要以家庭为生产单位，老年人参与社会的主要形式就是帮助家庭从事力所能及的农副业生产，其他形式的参与则为数甚少。城市老年人参与社会也存在不同的情况,主要形式有:①参与决策和咨询。主要是过去担任过领导职务的离退休干部，重新组织起来开展调查研究，给各项工作提供决策、咨询建议。②参加生产。继续在原生产部门或转到其他生产部门参加力所能及的生产、工作或劳动。③专业服务。有各种专业特长者以业务咨询或技术、教育、文化、医疗专长继续服务于社会。④社区工作。包括参加治安联防、纠纷调解、交通管理、环境卫生监督和居民委员会工作等。老年人参与社会的方式有续聘、返聘、重新就业及义务或半义务等多种。未参加过就业劳动的老年人,特别是老年妇女,参与社会的机会则较少。
