测量球隙利用球间隙放电测量高电压的装置。20世纪初已经开始研究和应用。测量球隙是一对直径相同的金属球(一般应用铜球)，在一定的大气状况下,两球间隙有一比较固定的放电电压。由此可用来测量一个未知高电压的峰值。球隙的放电电压可从国际标准和各国国家标准中查得。若测量时的空气状态不同于标准状态，需根据当时的气压－气温加以校正。试验标准所推荐的球隙放电电压表的数值，是事先经过许多国家用实验方法获得的。测量球的直径从2厘米到2米甚至3米,可测峰值电压范围从 2千伏到高于2000千伏。球隙的布置有垂直和水平两种。图中所示为垂直布置的状况。标准中对各种尺寸，如图中的A、B距离及球的表面状态，使用方法等，都有具体技术规定。≤0.5条件下，测量交流电压及冲击电压的误差为≤3％；测量直流高压时,由于灰尘、纤维等杂质影响特别严重，测量误差较大,≤0.4时，误差为≤5％。测量球隙可用于交流电压、正负极性的标准雷电全波冲击电压、长波尾冲击电压及直流电压等高电压的测量。近年来，各国研究采用棒间隙来测量直流高压，它可减小放电分散性和测量误差。
